What It Measures

Sodium is one of the most important electrolytes in your body, and this blood test measures its concentration in your bloodstream. It plays a central role in regulating the balance of fluids inside and outside your cells, supporting nerve signalling, and helping your muscles contract properly. Healthy sodium levels are essential because even small shifts can affect how you feel on a daily basis. When sodium is well balanced, your body maintains the right amount of fluid in your blood vessels and tissues, your nerves transmit signals efficiently, and your muscles, including your heart, contract in a coordinated way. Because sodium has such far reaching effects, your body works hard to keep it within a remarkably tight range.

Imagine your bloodstream as a carefully calibrated solution. Sodium acts like the key ingredient that determines how concentrated that solution is, and your kidneys serve as the master regulators, constantly adjusting how much sodium they retain or flush out in your urine. Hormones such as aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone fine-tune this process, responding to signals from your brain and adrenal glands. When you drink more water, your kidneys dilute the sodium slightly; when you are dehydrated, they hold on to it more tightly. Your sodium level can be influenced by how much fluid you drink, your dietary salt intake, and how much you sweat, particularly during exercise or hot weather. Certain medications, especially diuretics and some blood pressure treatments, can also shift your reading. Prolonged vomiting, diarrhoea, or intensive endurance exercise may temporarily lower sodium, while significant dehydration can push it higher. Below Range

A mildly low sodium level, hyponatraemia, is quite common and can be caused by drinking large amounts of water, certain medications, or even intense exercise in hot weather. Low sodium is rarely a serious issue but still requires discussion with your GP to exclude a pathology. If your result is only slightly below range, your GP may simply suggest monitoring it at your next routine blood test.

Normal

Within Range

Your sodium level is within the healthy range, which means your body is doing a great job of maintaining its fluid balance. Sodium plays a vital role in nerve and muscle function, so this is a reassuring result.

High

Above Range

A mildly raised sodium level, hypernatraemia, is most commonly caused by not drinking quite enough fluid before the test. It can also be influenced by diet or certain medications. This is usually easy to address by increasing your water intake. If your GP feels it warrants attention, they may suggest a simple repeat test.
