Rheumatoid Factor (RF) is a type of antibody, a protein produced by your immune system, that can sometimes mistakenly target your own body's healthy tissues rather than foreign invaders like bacteria or viruses. Specifically, RF is an antibody directed against another antibody class called immunoglobulin G (IgG). When present at elevated levels, it can indicate that the immune system may be in a state of heightened activity, and it is most commonly associated with autoimmune joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Understanding your RF level is important because it helps build a fuller picture of your immune health, particularly if you are experiencing symptoms such as joint stiffness, swelling, or persistent fatigue. However, it is worth knowing that RF is not exclusive to any single condition, it can be modestly elevated in other autoimmune situations, during certain infections, and even in some perfectly healthy individuals, particularly as they get older. Think of your immune system as a highly trained security team: most of the time it correctly identifies and neutralises genuine threats, but occasionally it can become overzealous and start flagging friendly colleagues. RF is essentially evidence of this friendly fire, and while its presence raises a question worth exploring, it does not on its own provide a definitive answer. Your RF level can be influenced by a number of factors. Age is one of the most common, a small percentage of healthy people over 65 will have a mildly positive RF without any associated symptoms. Chronic infections, smoking, and certain liver conditions can also contribute to elevated readings. Conversely, some people with active autoimmune joint conditions may test negative for RF, which is why doctors typically interpret this marker alongside other tests, your symptoms, and a clinical examination. If your RF result is outside the expected range, or if you have any concerns about your joint health, your GP is the best person to discuss next steps and whether further investigation would be helpful.

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is an antibody your immune system produces primarily in response to allergens and parasitic infections. Although it circulates in very small amounts compared to other antibodies, IgE punches well above its weight, it is the driving force behind allergic reactions, from hay fever and eczema to food allergies and allergic asthma. When your body encounters something it considers a threat (such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites, or certain foods), IgE binds to immune cells called mast cells and basophils. On re-exposure, these IgE-coated cells release histamine and other chemicals, producing the familiar symptoms of allergy, itching, sneezing, swelling, or in severe cases, anaphylaxis. A total IgE test measures the overall level of IgE antibodies in your blood. It does not tell you what you are allergic to, that requires specific IgE testing for individual allergens. However, a raised total IgE can be a helpful screening tool that suggests your immune system has an allergic tendency (sometimes called atopy). Moderately elevated IgE is common in people with eczema, asthma, hay fever, or food allergies. Very high levels can occasionally be seen with parasitic infections (particularly in travellers), certain immune conditions, or, rarely, more complex immune disorders. Normal IgE does not completely rule out allergies, some people with genuine allergic conditions have IgE levels within the standard range. Similarly, mildly raised IgE does not always mean you will experience allergic symptoms. If your IgE is outside the expected range, your GP can help determine whether allergy testing, lifestyle adjustments, or specialist referral would be appropriate.
