Neutrophils Percentage

Neutrophil percentage shows what proportion of your total white blood cells are neutrophils, the fast-acting cells that form your immune system's first line of defence against bacterial infection. While the absolute neutrophil count tells you the raw number, the percentage reveals the balance between neutrophils and the other types of white blood cell. This balance is important because your immune system relies on teamwork between several different cell types, each with its own speciality.

When neutrophils make up a larger share than usual, it often indicates your body is actively responding to a bacterial challenge or experiencing physical stress. When the proportion drops, it may mean another type of white blood cell, such as lymphocytes, has increased in response to a viral infection, shifting the overall percentages. Everyday factors including recent infections, physical or emotional stress, medications, and even vigorous exercise can all influence your neutrophil percentage.

Because the percentage is relative, changes in any white blood cell type will affect the proportions of all the others. Your GP will typically look at both the percentage and the absolute count together to get a clear and accurate picture of your immune balance.
