Mean Platelet Volume
MPV - Mean Platelet Volume. MPV measures the average size of your platelets. Larger platelets are typically younger and more active.
What It Measures
Mean platelet volume measures the average size of your platelets, the tiny cell fragments responsible for blood clotting. While the platelet count tells you how many you have, MPV adds useful information about how active and effective those platelets are likely to be. Platelet size is linked to platelet activity because larger, younger platelets tend to be more reactive and stickier than smaller, older ones. Understanding the average size can help your healthcare team interpret your platelet count more fully. For example, if your platelet count is at the lower end of normal but your MPV is elevated, it may simply mean your bone marrow is working hard to compensate by producing larger, more potent platelets, a reassuring sign that your body is adapting well.
Your bone marrow produces platelets by breaking off fragments from very large cells called megakaryocytes. Freshly released platelets tend to be bigger and more active, then gradually shrink over their roughly ten-day lifespan as they circulate and age. When your body needs more clotting power, after an injury, for instance, or when platelet numbers drop, it ramps up production, and the average size increases because a greater proportion of young, large platelets enters the bloodstream. It is a clever self-regulating system. Factors that can influence your MPV include inflammation, infections, physical activity, and certain medications.
Smoking has also been associated with changes in platelet size. Because MPV is most informative when viewed alongside your platelet count and other clotting-related markers, it is best interpreted as part of the bigger picture. If your result is outside the typical range, your GP can explain what it means in the context of your overall health and whether any follow-up is advisable.
