What It Measures

Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration measures how densely packed the haemoglobin is within your red blood cells, not just how much is there, but how concentrated it is relative to the cell's volume. It is a subtle but valuable marker that can help distinguish between different reasons for changes in your blood picture. The concentration of haemoglobin inside each cell affects how efficiently oxygen is picked up and released. When the concentration is within a healthy range, your red blood cells are optimally loaded and can perform their gas-exchange role effectively. Significant shifts in either direction suggest that something about the way your cells are being built or maintained may need attention.

Imagine filling a sponge with water. Two sponges might hold the same total amount of water, but if one sponge is twice the size of the other, the water in the larger sponge is less concentrated, it is spread more thinly. MCHC works on the same principle: it looks at how much haemoglobin is present relative to the overall volume of the cell. A lower concentration can occur when iron is in short supply, because the cells end up with less haemoglobin relative to their size. A higher concentration is less common but can occur in certain inherited conditions that alter the shape and flexibility of red blood cells.

Iron intake and absorption are the most common factors influencing MCHC, but hydration, chronic inflammation, and some medications can also play a part. Because MCHC is best interpreted alongside MCV and MCH, your GP will typically look at all three together to understand what story your red blood cells are telling. High

Above Range

A raised MCHC means the concentration of haemoglobin within your red blood cells is higher than expected. This can be related to dehydration or conditions affecting the shape of red blood cells, such as hereditary spherocytosis. Your GP can review this alongside your other blood count results to determine whether further investigation is needed.
